About:
A study of basic international business concepts, cultural literacy, and discipline specific content will be applied to practical experiences and activities in Ireland. Coverage of the special issues faced when doing business internationally. Topics include the impact of culture, managing expatriates, global labor markets, recruiting globally, managing diverse teams, global employee benefits, repatriation, global security, and terrorism.
This course utilizes a Canva component, classroom instruction, and a 16-day study abroad trip to Galway, Ireland. We will visit business organizations near Galway and take excursions to the Cliffs of Moher and other fantastic sites in the West of Ireland.
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
- Identify and discuss the differences in cultural and business practices between the host country and those of the United States
- Delineate elements of the business environment of the host country
- Exhibit an appreciation of the aesthetic, cultural, and business norms of the country visited
- Be proficient in the day-to-day use of the currency of the host country
- Recognized and speak basic terms in the language of the host country
- Ascertain differences between management/HRM operations in the host country and those typically observed in the U.S.
- Become aware of the importance of teamwork and being a reliable member of a team in a foreign environment
- Recommended management/HRM practices from the host country that might be successfully integrated into domestic operations
- (Undergrad students only) Synthesize observations and experiences from the study abroad with prior research and management/HRM concepts into an acceptable written report
- (Graduate students only) Have delineated a research topic related to the host country, gathered data and information, and prepare and appropriate graduate-level research report, synthesis paper, or literature review
